Located in the heart of downtown Kingston, this commercial interior design project involved the transformation of a historic 1851 limestone building – originally designed by architect William Coverdale for barrister and later judge James A. Henderson – into a refined office space for Assante Wealth Management.
The design strikes a careful balance between preservation and progress. A new, historically appropriate portico was added to the exterior, enhancing the building’s classical proportions and public presence. Inside, the office fit-out was approached with sensitivity to the building’s architectural heritage, retaining original stair details, deep door casings, and plaster mouldings, while seamlessly integrating the infrastructure and functionality required for a modern professional workspace.
The exterior portico was recognized with a 2024 Heritage Conservation Award, celebrating the project’s commitment to historical integrity. The result is a dignified, highly functional environment that honours Kingston’s architectural legacy while serving the needs of a contemporary commercial office.
